Crystal DeMello, Southside Director, 14U Head Coach
Coaching: 7 years HS / 10 years Club
Southside Director Crystal DeMello began playing volleyball for Salem Volleyball club at the age of eleven before transferring to Portland Volleyball Club in high school. She played three years of varsity volleyball for McNary High School where her team finished fifth in state during her senior year. After accepting a Division 2 full ride scholarship to the University of Charleston in West Virginia, she started and played middle/right side for two years. She then transferred to Willamette University where she continued playing until graduation. Crystal has coached in a number of capacities for twelve years (ten years with CEVA). She spent five years as the Assistant Varsity coach for St. Mary’s Academy in Portland and coached club volleyball with MAC club, Blues Volleyball club, and most recently with Portland Volleyball club (PVC). She returned to her hometown of Salem last season to join the Southside team as Director.
Scott Kirchner, 17U Head Coach
Coaching: 11 years HS / 3 years Club / 2 seasons Boys & Girls Club
Coach Kirchner’s passion for volleyball began out of high school when he played for a Men’s B level team, competing in USVBA tournaments throughout the Pacific Northwest. Selected to compete on a Junior Development Team, he spent two years playing in Canada and the USA. He attended college at Oregon State University where he was a member of the OSU Men’s Club AA Team, competing in the Northwest Collegiate League.
He has a long history of coaching volleyball with experience as an assistant coach at Oregon State University and Central Oregon Community College and many years of volunteering with West Salem High School, Salem/Keizer Middle Schools, the Boys and Girls Club of Salem, and various instructional camps throughout the state. He has been the Assistant Varsity Volleyball coach for North Salem High School for five years and has coached Southside’s 16U team for two years. He still enjoys playing competitively in co-ed city leagues and CEVA tournaments.
Brittany Oakman, 17U Assistant Coach
Coaching: 2 years Club
Brittany Oakman played varsity her freshman year in High School with a winning state tournament in 2006 and all conference the following two years. She played as a DS/OH at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN division 3, where they made it to the NCAA second round in 2011. Coach Oakman has coached 2 club teams in her hometown of Virginia, MN.
Jasmine Havig, 17U Assistant Coach
Coaching: 4 years HS / 6 years Club
Jasmine has been involved in the Volleyball world for over 17 years. As a kid she played club and school ball when it was offered in the small town of Dallas, OR. She played all 4 years on varsity. After graduation, she was recruited to play at Umpqua Community College where she set for the Riverhawks. Coach Havig started her coaching career as a volunteer at Sprague High School. She was then promoted to Head Freshmen coach at Sprague the following year and held that position for 3 seasons; she was then promoted to JV head coach and held that position for 1 season and decided to take a break from High School Volleyball. She has been with Southside for 5 years and hopes to continue inspiring young athletes through club ball.
Brandi Holmes, 16U Head Coach
Coaching: 2 years HS / 3 years Club / 6 seasons Boys & Girls Club
Coach Holmes fell in love with volleyball at the age of ten and has been playing and coaching ever since. She played club volleyball in Washington DC until she moved to the Salem area where she played in high school for North Salem High School and for a local club. About five years ago, she began volunteering with the Boys and Girls club where she has coached a variety of ages. She has assisted the volleyball program at Houck Middle School and is currently the JV2 coach at North Salem High School. Coach Holmes enjoys playing volleyball in both an adult co-ed league and women’s league and is excited to start her third year coaching for Southside.
Marysia Gilyard, 16U Assistant Coach
Coaching: 2 years HS / 3 years Club
Coach Gilyard began playing volleyball in middle school for Salem Volleyball Club. She went on to play for South Salem High School and was part of the undefeated Valley League Champion team in 2003. In 2006 she began coaching a Salem Volleyball Underground 12u team, and in 2009 was the Assistant Coach for South Salem’s freshman team. She joined Southside for the 2015-2016 season as the 14u assistant coach and is looking forward to another successful and exciting club season.
Alyssa Finn, 12U Head Coach
Coaching: 7 years Club
Alyssa began playing volleyball for Salem Volleyball club in middle school, played club throughout high school and was selected for the Columbia Empire Youth Regional Team twice. While playing, she had the opportunity to compete against the Russian and Chinese Youth National teams. Alyssa was a three year starter for Sprague High school as an outside hitter and libero, and was selected for All-Valley League two of those seasons. She went on to play three seasons for Pacific University as a libero. Her coaching career began in 2009 with OJVA where she coached three seasons at the 14u level, along with several summer camps. She has since coached 12U and 14U teams for Southside.
Kenny Hise, 12U Assistant Coach
Coach Hise’s volleyball career began in a PE class at South Salem High School where a boy’s tournament team was formed. In 1982, the team took second place in the state tournament and Coach Hise, along with two of his teammates, were named All-State. He attended college at Oregon State University where he played for their men’s volleyball club and for CFP, a men’s volleyball club in Salem. In 1987, he began playing in the USAV Men’s Open Division for the NO DINX Men’s National Team, competing throughout the USA and Canada. The team won the Columbia Empire Regional Championship seven times and placed 10th at the Kansas City Nationals.
After graduating from OSU with a degree in Education, he began his coaching career at South Salem High School as the JV coach for two years. He was then hired as the Head Volleyball Coach at Willamette University where he coached for three years. After a short break from volleyball, he returned to South Salem High School as the head Volleyball coach for twelve years. During his time at South, the Saxons made seven state playoff appearances and won three Valley League Championships. He has coached for Southside since 2012 for both 16u and 18u teams.
